Here’s an example where the Canon MP-E just wouldn’t cut it. I started out trying to get a macro shot of some other boring thing, then ditched that idea and got a cute shot of OJ without changing lenses. :-)

I tried to use CombineZ today, a focus-stacking tool. The above is a composite of 8 images shot at around 3x magnification with the Canon MP-E macro lens. The flower pictured is probably 3mm in diameter.

Still playing with the MP-E… this was around 4x magnification.

I rented one of the kings of macro lenses, the Canon MP-E 1-5X zoom. I’m still getting used to it, and the above is my first real attempt. This lens is a real challenge to use, since its just plain hard to see what you’re pointing it at! With this shot I tried to retain the center point as consistently as possible, but minor adjustments were required. These shots are pretty much straight out of the camera, I just used photoshop to merge compose them into one image.

This shot was very much from the hip and a bit hurried, but I liked it anyway. My only qualm was the lack of definition in the arm supporting this candle holder.

I might revisit this later in the week, I have a rental lens coming that I think will offer a different perspective… :)
