Customer Support Experience: Vivitar

In December of ’09, I got a Vivitar DF-383 flash. About 6 months later, it died.

Fortunately for me I had the original invoice from B&H, and Vivitar has a 1-year warranty.  The experience of calling these guys up was surprisingly relaxed – there’s no RMA number you get, no tracking info, for that matter, there’s really no authorization process to speak of.  I could have skipped the call and just sent them the flash along with a little note saying “its broken – the zoom clicks and it stops at 28mm” and that’d have been fine.

Yesterday I got my box back from Vivitar with a brand new DF-383 inside, for Canon, no less.  It’d have been charming if they sent a Nikon flash.  While their support seems a bit minimalist, I can’t fault those guys for a decidedly no-hassle experience.  The real test will be if the new unit lasts more than 6 months.

Normally I do very little post-production on my shots – some spot removal, some minor noise reduction, some tweaking of the black levels and that’s it. This one I played around some more to get a black and white that I liked. All told it was still under 15 minutes of post work, but its about twice as much as I normally do.

This was a really quick shot; I probably could have polished it some more, but its a lazy Saturday…

Two images for today … I was at the NCBG again today. I think I saw 30+ butterflies in one area of the garden.

Sounds better than “shrubbery, shrubbery, shrubbery”! Though that has me thinking of Monty Python…

A small Lightroom milestone

I just crossed the 10k photo mark in my main Lightroom catalog.

I just crossed the 10k photo mark in my main Lightroom catalog.  The breakdown is roughly 3,200 “old” photos -  these include random scans of old prints and pictures from my first digital camera (a 3MP Olympus from 2001) – and around 6800 pictures I’ve kept since November 2008 when I got my Rebel XSi.
